Chapter Nine

“You didn’t have to hit him!” Paolo exclaimed. At least he’d caught Dakota before he hit the floor. “What if you seriously hurt him?”

“I didn’t,” Erin replied. “I have my black belt in—”

“I don’t care what you have it in,” Paolo snapped. He began to carry Dakota to the bed. “I didn’t want him hurt.”

“He would have hit you if he hadn’t thought you’d kill him.” Erin shrugged. “Plus, it was a chance to see if that pinch would really work. He’s really skinny. Heroin chic, or naturally thin?”

“Erin,” Paolo growled, exasperated by the man. “Can you stop being an ass?”

“Probably not. And on that note, I’m going to go call Andrew, and Claude, I guess. Can’t have him thinking I narc’d about vampires. I prefer to keep my memories.” Erin left the room.

“At least he’s honest about being an ass,” Paolo murmured as he laid Dakota out on the bed. “I don’t even know where he hit you. Pinched you. Whatever he did. I’m so sorry, sugar.”

Dakota groaned and squirmed, then his eyes snapped open and he gasped. “Don’t bite me!”

Paolo’s fangs had been giving him trouble, mainly because he liked Dakota, and yes, he wanted to feed from him. Paolo had tried to deny that urge, but it wouldn’t go away. He’d never force himself on anyone, though. The very idea did what he’d been trying to do and sent his fangs away. “I wouldn’t, ever.” It occurred to him that he should have denied that he was a vampire in the first place. If he’d tried hard enough, he might have convinced Dakota that the whole episode had been a dream.

Except he didn’t want to lie to Dakota. The poor guy had been manipulated enough. Chances were good, however, that Claude would show up after sunset and erase all the memories Dakota had of vampires existing. Paolo doubted he’d be able to talk Claude out of doing that. Maybe he could ask Claude to erase the memories of Utah—

No. No way will I help dabble with his brain. “We aren’t monsters,” Paolo blurted, lowering himself to sit on the floor beside the bed. “We aren’t.” The rug was scratchy under his legs and butt. He wished he could sit on the bed or cuddle on it with Dakota. “I mean, some vampires are, just like some humans are monsters. It’s… It’s not what we are, but who we are inside that makes us good or bad.”

Dakota’s eyes had gotten wider with every sentence Paolo spoke. “R-right. S-sure.”

Paolo shrank down, pulling his knees to his chest and hunching over, trying to look small and not dangerous. “It’s true. My coven, we are all decent people. We aren’t dead. We’re alive, and we have feelings and dreams, regrets and needs.”

“L-like blood,” Dakota said in an accusatory tone.

There was no use denying that one. “Yes, like blood, but we don’t attack anyone for it. There are a lot of people who are into vampire play, who beg to be bitten.
